Lasting Powers of Attorney
A Lasting Power of Attorney is a legal document whereby a person (the Donor) can appoint someone they trust to make decisions on their behalf. This document can be drawn up at any time whilst the Donor understands the implications of the document. A Lasting Power of Attorney has no legal standing until it has been registered with the Office of The Public Guardian. The registration can be attended to as soon as the document has been signed or alternatively registration can be postponed until such it is needed in the future.
There are two types of Lasting Powers of Attorney, one which deals with decisions about how to spend the Donor’s money and the way their property affairs are managed and the second enables the Donor to make decisions about their healthcare and welfare.
Once a Lasting Power of Attorney is registered it continues indefinitely.
